Daily brief · 2026-10-15
A hot CPI print triggered the worst AI-complex selloff since July — CoreWeave -15.5%, the optical and HBM rungs down double digits, the power rung off 5-7% — with no equity in the basket green but a crossover fund.
The compute basket had no genuine equity gainer Wednesday — the only green mark was the Fundrise Innovation Fund (VCX) +4.7% to $25.38, a private-market crossover vehicle whose daily NAV is not a tape signal. The real story was a broad AI-complex selloff, the market's worst day since July, after a hotter-than-expected September CPI pushed rate-hike bets higher and sent the Philadelphia semiconductor index down 4.3%. Every rung of the AI-buildout chokepoint the vertical maps — compute, memory, optics, packaging, power — sold in unison, which is itself the read: this was a repricing of the cost of capital underwriting the entire buildout, not a demand signal about any one layer.
The laggard was CoreWeave (CRWV), down 15.5% to $65.78, extending a brutal stretch for the most financially leveraged name in the stack — a neocloud whose data-center buildout is funded with debt whose service cost climbs directly with the rate curve. On a hot-inflation day, the market sold the balance-sheet risk first, and CRWV took the worst of a selloff that also caught Oracle down roughly 9% in the broader tape. The optical-interconnect rung, the physical chokepoint between accelerators, was close behind: Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) -11.8% to $86.22, Credo (CRDO) -9.6% to $179.23, Lumentum (LITE) -9.3% to $896.33, Coherent (COHR) -9.2% to $263.32, Fabrinet (FN) -8.2% to $392.95 and Marvell (MRVL) -8.7% to $245.28.
Memory and packaging stayed in the firing line: SK hynix fell 11.1% on its Seoul line, Micron (MU) -4.1% to $914.13, and metrology name Onto Innovation (ONTO) -8.4% to $241.41. The accelerator and switch names that anchor demand also derated — NVIDIA (NVDA) -3.2% to $221.30, Broadcom (AVGO) -3.1% to $346.25, AMD -5.7% to $570.82 — and critically, the power rung that had decoupled and rallied earlier in the week finally joined: Vistra (VST) -6.5% to $151.79, GE Vernova (GEV) -6.2% to $941.78, Talen (TLN) -6.2% to $358.42 and Constellation (CEG) -5.5% to $279.54. When even the grid-supply chokepoint sells, the tape is pricing macro, not microstructure. The lone on-theme bright spot was electronic-materials supplier Merck KGaA (MKKGY) +2.4% to $31.62.
The near calendar is thin now that OCP Global Summit and SEMICON West — where interconnect, packaging and tool roadmaps get set — wrap this week in the Bay Area. The next dated milestone with structural weight is the year-end window for Intel's 14A external-customer decision, the domestic leading-edge validation the foundry rung is waiting on. Until the rate picture resets, the AI complex will trade as one correlated block, and a single CPI print can take down every rung at once — as it did today.
