An optical-interconnect melt-up led by Coherent's PhotonLink lifted the whole datacenter-optics rung as life-science materials lagged.
Coherent (COHR) led the vertical, up 10.9% to $319.19, after launching PhotonLink — a platform for co-packaged, near-packaged, and chip-to-chip optics built for AI datacenters, with a revenue ramp guided to begin in Q4 2026 — and picking up a Bernstein Outperform initiation at a $350 target. The call lit the entire optical-interconnect chokepoint, the bandwidth rung that every accelerator cluster bottlenecks on as switch speeds climb. Applied Optoelectronics jumped 8.1% to $107.32, Credo +7.9% to $210.17, Lumentum +7.7% to $1,045.78, Fabrinet +6.4% to $451.44, and Corning +4.3% to $160.42, with Bernstein framing the group as structural AI winners and reports of possible US curbs on Chinese transceivers adding a reshoring bid.
The laggard was Merck KGaA's ADR (MilliporeSigma), down 3.2% to $30.11, pulled lower with the broad life-science and specialty-materials selloff that hit the electronic-chemicals names; Japan's Ibiden slipped 3.0% to $76.12 on its US line, and Broadcom eased 2.1% to $343.64 after a strong run. Those were the exceptions on an otherwise firm tape.
Breadth sat with equipment, memory, and datacenter power. Lam Research rose 3.5% to $340.10 and Applied Materials +3.5% to $529.30, KLA +2.8% to $200.33, Entegris +2.9% to $158.48, and Micron +3.0% to $1,097.39 on the HBM rung. The electrons-for-AI layer was bid in sympathy: GE Vernova +3.9% to $987.45, Talen Energy +3.3% to $323.09, nVent +3.4% to $165.77, Quanta +3.1% to $662.60, Vertiv +2.0% to $246.12, and Constellation +1.9% to $258.92. SoftBank's ADR added 3.8% to $20.76. FormFactor cooled 0.6% to $148.44 and ASML was flat-to-lower at $1,808.49. The through-line: on a day the optics names ran, conviction still spread across the full buildout — interconnect, equipment, memory, and power alike.
The near-term calendar is conference- and policy-heavy. OCP Global Summit (San Jose, Oct 12–15) and SEMICON West (San Francisco, Oct 13–15) are the next venues where interconnect, advanced-packaging, and cooling roadmaps get set — directly relevant to the optics rung that led Thursday. Intel's 14A external-customer decision window opens at year-end, the domestic-foundry validation signal the vertical is watching, and the OpenAI Q4 IPO listing window remains the private-compute wildcard that would reprice the neocloud rung.
