An AI-hardware selloff — amplified by OpenAI pausing training on some advanced models — hit accelerators, interconnect, and cooling, while Nvidia's buyback kept the accelerator rung green.
Merck KGaA's ADR (MKKGY) led the vertical narrowly, up 2.6% to $31.66 — one of the few green corners of an otherwise red tape. Merck KGaA sits on the substrates-resist-and-wafer-materials rung through its Electronics arm, but the read here is defensive, not demand-driven: the day's corporate headline was a parent-level pharma deal — an exclusive global license for SPR2015, an oral KRAS G12D inhibitor, from SciBrunch Therapeutics — rather than anything in its semiconductor-materials business. In a session where the AI-hardware complex sold hard, a diversified electronic-materials supplier catching a bid is a rotation signal, not a sign the wafer-materials rung is tightening.
The laggard was Modine (MOD), down 11.6% to $175.04 on the liquid-cooling-and-thermal chokepoint. The move was deal-mechanics and positioning: the stock traded ex-dividend ($1.90) Monday, and investors repositioned around its planned Performance Technologies separation and the Gentherm spin-off combination moving toward close. Thermal is a genuinely binding rung as racks outgrow air cooling, but Modine had become a crowded momentum name, and a rate-driven risk-off de-rated it sharply.
The broader session was an AI-hardware give-back, sharpened by reports that OpenAI paused training and testing of some of its most advanced models — which hit the accelerator and interconnect rungs directly. AMD −3.6% to $607.87 and Marvell (MRVL) −3.8% on accelerators and optical interconnect; Credo (CRDO) −8.7% to $192.67, giving back Friday's earnings pop; Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) −4.5% and Coherent (COHR) −4.5% on optics; Meta (META) −4.8% to $715.62 and CoreWeave (CRWV) −2.9% on the capex and neocloud rungs; Vertiv (VRT) −3.6% on thermal-power and Micron (MU) −2.6% on HBM. Nvidia bucked it, +1.7% to $228.86, on the $150 billion buyback expansion and OpenAI's roughly $856 billion compute-spend plans through 2030 — the accelerator rung's incumbency premium. The equipment layer held: ASML +1.6% to $1,771.41, KLA +0.7%, Applied Materials +0.4%, TSMC +0.5%.
The catalysts ahead are M&A- and conference-driven. Ecolab's ~$4.75 billion CoolIT acquisition is expected to close this quarter — the liquid-cooling rung consolidating as MOD reshuffles. The OpenAI Q4 IPO window and Anthropic pricing window remain the private-compute wildcards. The OCP Global Summit (Oct 12-15, San Jose) and SEMICON West (Oct 13-15, San Francisco) are the next hardware and equipment showcases, and Intel's 14A external-customer decision window opens at year-end — the domestic-foundry validation signal.
