Meta's Muse AI agent sparked a broad chip rally that sent Intel up 12% on foundry optimism, while electrical-steel name Cleveland-Cliffs bucked the tape lower.
Intel (INTC) led, up 12.1% to $121.78 — its highest close since early July — on a genuine catalyst stack rather than beta. Reports surfaced that SK Hynix may lease part of Intel's future Ohio fab or form a joint venture to manufacture memory in the US, a direct read on Intel Foundry utilization; analysts piled on, with Tigress lifting its target to $145 and Northland moving to Outperform on 18A execution and a server-CPU shortage; and a planned ~10% PC CPU price hike in early October underlined regained pricing power. The name is the purest expression of the vertical's core chokepoint — domestic leading-edge foundry capacity — and Monday priced its turnaround as more than a hope.
Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) was the laggard, down 3.4% to $12.07, the rare name to fall on a tape where the S&P rose 1.5%. There was no company catalyst; the move reads as profit-taking after a ~11% trailing-month run. Cliffs sits on the grid-and-power-materials rung the vertical maps — the grain-oriented electrical steel that goes into the transformers gating whether a data center can actually be energized. SK Hynix's Seoul line (−1.5% on its own session) and the non-traded Fundrise fund (VCX, −2.0%) were the only other soft marks in an otherwise green basket.
The engine of the whole tape was agentic-AI demand. Meta (META) surged 11.3% to $741.25 on early signs of success for its "Muse" AI agent, which sparked a wave of enthusiasm for the chips needed to power such agents — the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 4.3% for a fifth straight day and the Nasdaq 100 gained 2.8%. AMD (AMD) +9.9% to $615.52 topped a $1 trillion market cap for the first time, and the demand pull tightened every downstream rung: memory Micron (MU) +2.8% to $1,043.96, interconnect Credo (CRDO) +6.5% to $187.27 and Marvell (MRVL) +5.4% to $257.38, fab tools Lam Research (LRCX) +4.9% to $302.28, foundry TSMC (TSM) +2.4%, neocloud CoreWeave (CRWV) +5.0%, and NVIDIA (NVDA) +2.3% to $227.38. The power rung firmed too — Talen (TLN) +2.6% to $299.97 on data-center PPA demand.
The catalysts ahead are M&A- and conference-driven. Ecolab's ~$4.75B acquisition of liquid-cooling maker CoolIT is expected to close in Q3 — a direct read on the thermal chokepoint as racks push past air cooling. The OpenAI IPO listing window opens in Q4 and Anthropic's IPO pricing window sits later in 2026, the demand-side anchors for the whole buildout. The OCP Global Summit (Oct 12–15, San Jose) and SEMICON West (Oct 13–15, San Francisco) are the next hardware and equipment showcases, and Intel's 14A external-customer decision window opens at year-end — the signal that would validate today's foundry-led rally.
