The tools-and-optics layer ripped on an oversold bounce led by Applied Optoelectronics, while power names and SoftBank gave back.

Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) led, up 7.3% to $105.17, at the front of an oversold bounce that ran through the optical-interconnect and semicap complex after both groups were sold hard into September. The move had no fresh company release behind it; it reads as positioning returning to the corner of the market that gates the AI buildout — the pluggable optics and transceivers that carry traffic between accelerators, where AAOI has been one of 2026's biggest gainers. Coherent (COHR) rode alongside at +7.2% to $317.36 on the same optics bid, with Lumentum (LITE) +4.2% to $930.91 and Credo (CRDO) +4.5% to $175.89 on the interconnect rung. When a group moves together without a shared headline, positioning is doing the work.

SoftBank's ADR (SFTBY) was the laggard, down 3.7% to $20.37 — a mean-reversion after the prior session's Intel-stake-driven rip, not a supply-chain signal. The other soft spots were the power complex the buildout leans on: Constellation Energy (CEG) −3.1% to $254.71 and Vistra (VST) −2.0% to $140.67 gave back part of their datacenter-power premium, and hyperscaler Meta (META) −2.4% to $665.75 eased on the demand side. The declines were shallow and idiosyncratic; nothing in the memory, foundry, or thermal strait broke.

The genuine strength was the wafer-fab-equipment layer — the tools that reflect future capex rather than current chip demand. Lam Research (LRCX) rose 7.0% to $288.11, Applied Materials (AMAT) +6.5% to $444.57, FormFactor (FORM) +6.1% to $118.38, Entegris (ENTG) +5.6% to $142.25 on process materials, Onto Innovation (ONTO) +5.4% to $263.43 on metrology, and KLA (KLAC) +4.7% to $176.99 on inspection. The memory-and-packaging physical layer joined: Micron (MU) +3.9% to $1,015.80, Amkor (AMKR) +4.9% to $50.30 and ASE (ASX) +4.1% to $41.63 on assembly, with ASML (ASML) +3.1% to $1,679.92 and Broadcom (AVGO) +3.0% to $357.61. The read is consistent: capital paid up for the tools, optics, and packaging that gate whether accelerators get built and fed, while the utility offtake names took a breather.

The catalysts ahead are the supply-side calendar. SEMICON West (Oct 13–15, San Francisco) brackets packaging and lithography, and OCP Global Summit (Oct 12–15, San Jose) sets rack power and cooling standards. Ecolab's ~$4.75B CoolIT acquisition is expected to close this quarter, folding direct-liquid-cooling into the thermal chokepoint. On the demand side, the OpenAI IPO listing window is targeted to open early in Q4 — the event that validates or deflates the buildout thesis — with Anthropic's pricing window later in the year, and Intel's 14A external-customer decision window opens by year-end, the domestic-foundry swing factor.
