The optical-interconnect and memory-bandwidth chokepoints rallied against a red tape, with Lumentum up 6.2% ahead of Marvell's after-close print, while the power-and-grid names sold off.

Two chokepoints carried the day while everything else drifted with a risk-off tape. The optical-interconnect layer led: Lumentum +6.2% to $879.28, Applied Optoelectronics +5.7% to $129.10 and Marvell +5.8% to $251.01, all riding the same structural driver — the FCC's reported plan (first surfaced August 4) to bar new Chinese optical transceivers, the modules that route data inside AI data centers, where Zhongji Innolight holds roughly a quarter of the global market. A ban forces hyperscalers toward Western suppliers, and this basket is the supply. Note the Marvell move was positioning into its Q2 FY2027 print, which landed after Thursday's close, not a reaction to it — the numbers are Friday's story.

The memory-bandwidth choke firmed alongside: Micron +4.0% to $974.33, the domestic HBM pure-play, as the AI-server memory shortage narrative held and next-generation storage took center stage at the Flash Memory Summit. The read-through to the capex and thermal layers was positive at the margin — Vertiv +1.4% to $264.63 in liquid cooling, Lam Research +1.1% to $310.53 on the equipment side, Broadcom +0.4% to $364.03 — even as the broad market slipped on rising Treasury yields, Walmart's weak quarter and higher oil.

The weakness clustered in the power-and-grid chokepoint, the physical bottleneck on every data-center buildout. Cleveland-Cliffs, the domestic grain-oriented electrical-steel supplier that feeds grid and transformer demand, fell −3.8% to $10.74, and the generation-and-power complex went with it: Vistra −2.6% to $138.94, GE Vernova −2.2% to $966.01, Eaton −2.2% to $415.29 and Quanta Services −2.2% to $662.47. On the substrate-and-wafer-materials side, the print to watch was in Tokyo, not the US OTC tape: Ibiden, the dominant ABF-substrate maker, fell about −2.9% in its own session (its thinly-traded US line overstated the move), and SUMCO's US line was −3.8% to $43.29 — softness in the packaging-and-wafer inputs that gate every accelerator.

The catalyst calendar is dense and near. Hot Chips runs at Stanford August 23–25, Fabrinet — the optical-assembly bottleneck behind the transceiver names — reports fiscal Q4 on August 24, and NVIDIA's fiscal Q2 lands August 26 as the tape-setter for the whole accelerator-and-capex layer, with Broadcom's Q3 on September 3. Structurally further out: Ecolab's ~$4.75B CoolIT acquisition is expected to close in Q3, hardening the liquid-cooling choke, and the OpenAI and Anthropic listing windows sit in Q4. The session's message was narrow but clear — the market is still paying up for the interconnect and memory straits, and discounting the power that has to feed them.
