Vertiv's revenue miss triggered a 17% crash that took the entire data-center power-and-cooling complex down with it, while the semicap and memory rout ground on — the only green in the vertical was a private-fund NAV mark.
The only green worth naming in compute was not an operating company at all: the Fundrise Innovation Fund wrapper (VCX +3.3% to $34.92), a private-markets NAV mark, not a tradeable read on the buildout. Among names that actually trade, Fujifilm's ADR (+2.0%) and Alphabet (+0.9%) were the sole survivors, and both read as rotation rather than conviction. Everything priced on the AI-capex cycle fell, because Wednesday delivered two blows at once — a divided 9-3 Fed hold that pushed the 10-year past 4.67%, and a franchise earnings miss at the heart of the data-center thesis.
Vertiv was that miss, and the reaction was violent: −17.3% to $223.04, its worst single day in more than fifteen months. The quarter was not a demand collapse — adjusted EPS of $1.52 beat the $1.42 consensus and management raised full-year guidance — but revenue of $3.27 billion missed the $3.37 billion Street number by roughly $110 million, which management pinned on timing and supply-chain sequencing across increasingly complex AI-infrastructure projects. Owning the thermal-and-power chokepoint cuts both ways: on a risk-off day, a top-line miss from the company that cools and powers the racks is the crack the market punishes hardest. It dragged the whole complex down — Modine −14.4% to $178.04, nVent −5.7%, Eaton −6.3%, GE Vernova −4.6%, Vistra −3.9%.
Beneath the power complex, the four-day semiconductor rout ground on, fed by reports of Chinese state-backed DUV lithography mass-production, memory-maker CXMT's Shanghai debut, and Korea's curbs on leveraged chip ETFs. The metrology and materials chokepoints fell hardest: KLA −10.8% to $170.19 (reporting Q4 today), Micron −9.9% to $739, Entegris −9.4% to $107.01, Onto Innovation −9.7%, Camtek −9.3%, Applied Materials −8.4%. Optical interconnect and neocloud sank with them — Applied Optoelectronics −13.2% to $76.52, CoreWeave −9.6% to $60.82.
The next tape is already half-written. After Wednesday's close, Microsoft jumped roughly 9% and Meta fell more than 6% on earnings — the hyperscaler-capex read that will drive Thursday (both closed only modestly red in the regular session, MSFT −0.7%, META −1.3%). The dated calendar carries the rest: KLA, Entegris and Quanta Services today (July 30); AMD on August 4; Vertiv and Eaton on August 5, the definitive test of whether data-center power orders are still accelerating; Applied Materials' fiscal Q3 on August 13; NVIDIA on August 26; and Ecolab's ~$4.75 billion CoolIT close pending in Q3. With circular-financing fears and memory pricing already the market's frame, those prints set the trend — not one hawkish afternoon.
