The AI-hardware rout deepened into a full capital-equipment and memory rout — Amkor's post-earnings crash led a broad breakdown while a cooling-water franchise was almost the only thing green.

The only durable green in compute was defensive by design. Ecolab rose 4.2% to $282.90 after a clean Q2 — adjusted EPS $2.09 past consensus, revenue $4.42 billion, organic sales up 5% — and a raised full-year EPS guide to $8.05–$8.25. Ecolab maps to the water-and-cooling chokepoint under the data-center buildout, a position its pending $4.75 billion CoolIt acquisition deepens toward direct liquid cooling. On a day the market dumped anything priced on the AI-capex cycle, a franchise that sells the water and thermal chemistry regardless of which accelerator wins caught exactly the kind of bid that signals rotation away from the silicon, not conviction in it.

Amkor was the day's clean break: −24.7% to $45.69, the vertical's worst single-name move, and it fell despite a beat. The advanced-packaging leader posted record Q2 revenue of ~$1.9 billion, up 26%, with EPS of $0.70 well ahead of estimates — then guided a soft third quarter on the communications end market and flagged disruption from migrating system-in-package production out of Korea to Vietnam. Owning the OSAT chokepoint cuts both ways: when the market is hunting for cracks in the AI-hardware story, cautious second-half guidance from the company that packages the chips is the crack it will punish hardest.

The selloff was broad and structural, driven by China-competition and AI-financing fears — a report of Chinese state-backed mass production of immersion DUV lithography, Chinese memory maker CXMT's Shanghai debut, and Nvidia's reported talks to backstop ~$250 billion of OpenAI data-center financing, which cost Nvidia its most-valuable-company crown to Apple. The memory and wafer chokepoints fell hardest: Micron −8.9% to $820.53, Sumco −13.5% to $38.45. The equipment wing broke with it — Lam Research −7.5% to $269.61, Applied Materials −7.8% to $476.46, ASML −4.4% to $1,582.95, Onto Innovation −7.8%. Optical interconnect sank (Lumentum −8.4% to $651.93) and the AI-power complex de-rated in sympathy (Talen −6.1%, Vertiv −6.3%). Nvidia itself was nearly flat, +0.3% to $197.01 — the eye of the storm rather than its cause.

The calendar decides whether this is a capacity scare or a digestion. SK hynix delivers the definitive HBM read today (July 29), with Modine's cooling print the same day; KLA, Quanta Services and Entegris — the metrology, grid-build and materials chokepoints — all land July 30. Then the demand side answers: AMD on August 4, and Vertiv and Eaton on August 5 test whether data-center power orders are still accelerating. With circular-financing risk now the market's frame and memory pricing openly in doubt, these prints, not Tuesday's tape, set the trend.
