GE Vernova cratered 9% on a profit miss even as its grid backlog hit a record — the power chokepoint reset on valuation while memory and neocloud stayed bid into a dense print week.
SK hynix (000660.KS) led the quotable basket, up 4.9% in its latest Seoul session to ₩1,919,000, the HBM chokepoint back in demand as memory prices and accelerator attach rates keep its 2026 output sold out — the company holds roughly 58% of the high-bandwidth-memory market that gates every AI training cluster. The bid carried the US tape: CoreWeave +3.8% to $82.64, Besi +3.6% to $283.80, Broadcom +2.7% to $396.81, and Nvidia +2.3% to $212.06. Memory and the neocloud sit upstream of every hyperscaler capex dollar, and they held while the equipment names that sell directly into datacenters wobbled.
GE Vernova was the laggard, down 8.7% to $985.03, after reporting Q2 on July 22: revenue of $11.1B (+22%) beat, orders grew 88% organically to $24.2B, and backlog reached $176B — but GAAP EPS of $2.47 missed the ~$3.2 consensus as the Wind unit stayed a drag, even as management raised the full-year revenue outlook. GEV anchors the power-grid chokepoint — the turbines, transformers, and grid gear that decide how fast datacenters can energize — so the sell-off was a valuation reset on a stretched multiple, not a demand signal. A record $176B backlog says the grid bottleneck is only tightening.
The rest of the power complex that feeds compute stayed green despite GEV: Constellation +4.8% to $274.90, Talen +3.1% to $377.41, and Vistra +2.7% to $166.74, as the datacenter-power narrative held. Back-end packaging firmed — Besi +3.6%, ASE (ASX) +1.2% to $40.49 — while the prior day's optical winner reversed hard: Applied Optoelectronics -7.3% to $110.52 after its 16% surge, and Fabrinet -2.6% to $513.67. The hyperscaler buyers held back into their own prints: Microsoft -1.9% to $390.34 and Meta -2.6% to $627.17.
It is the densest print week of the quarter. Intel, Besi, and Samsung report today (July 23), Amkor July 27, and the heavyweights Alphabet and Microsoft July 28. SK hynix's Q2 on July 29 is the definitive HBM read, and KLA, Entegris, and Quanta close the month July 30. These results decide whether the two-week repricing of the memory-and-power tiers is a durable rotation or an overshoot.
